A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory (including the types of faculty and staff included as researchers):
The University of Kentucky Office of Research supplied data about the number of total employees, paid in full or in part, on a grant through the university between 2016 and 2018. Categories of temporary employees, retirees, graduate assistants, students, visiting scholars and fellows were filtered out and the result included 5736 unique names. This figure was used to report total UK faculty and staff engaged in research.
To determine the proportion of those faculty that were doing work that contributed to sustainability a list of search terms was created based on earth charter, UN sustainable development goals and knowledge of the types of projects specific to Kentucky and Appalachia that pertain to the ecological, economic and social objectives of sustainability.
The complete list of search terms, including any notes about additional filters which were applied to refine those primary topical results are provided as "Additional documentation to support the submission" (see below).
Research Centers and Institutes at UK that align with sustainability goals (as described by Earthcharter.org) are summarized in the attachment included as Supporting information in AC 10.
