A brief description of the student group:
The UK Greenthumb Environmental Club was founded on the University of Kentucky campus in 1993. The largest student-run environmental club in the Commonwealth, Greenthumb has been and remains active in environmental activism around a variety of local, state, and national issues. In addition to beginning the push for a campus green fee to support renewable energy on campus, Greenthumb members have lobbied for change on campus by holding positions within Student Government, the President’s Sustainability Advisory Committee, the Student Sustainability Council, the original Sustainability Task Force and various other university bodies.
Greenthumb is also active off the UK campus, and is loosely affiliated with larger environmental activist organizations like the Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, the Cumberland (KY) Chapter of the Sierra Club, Mountain Justice, Student Environmental Action Coalition and Kentucky Student Environmental Coalition, with members having lobbied in Frankfort and marched on Capitol Hill.
