A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, legislation, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:
The University of Kansas is an active player in local, state and national government. The KU Government Relations team advocates for policies and practices that sustain the University’s educational mission. Much of KU's policy advocacy comes through lobbying efforts. KU faculty and staff are also often asked to present for state House and Senate committees to provide their expertise on topics of concern. A few issues that KU has advocated for include climate change, environmental impact assessment, and alternative fuels research. The Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs is directly involved with local government and the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce to address needs of both the community and the university. Meetings the local government give KU a voice for our stakeholders in financial and developmental decisions throughout Lawrence in its surrounding areas.

A brief description of other political positions the institution has taken during the previous three years:
In a time where state-level education cuts are the prevailing circumstance, including cuts to research funding, the University has fought at both the state and federal levels to maintain and increase alternative energy research funding. The University understands the high degree of potential that exists in our state for alternative, renewable energy production and research conducted at KU will improve those technologies and expedite our economies shift from fossil-fuels to renewables.
