The Lights Out! Energy Saving Competition between Bailey, Green, and Summerfield Halls resulted in significant reductions in energy consumption over a 12-week period in spring 2012. Prior to and during the competition, the Center for Sustainability worked with individuals in each department in the three halls previously listed in an attempt to significantly decrease energy consumption. All departments were also provided with compact fluorescent light bulbs for task lighting as a promotional tool for the competition.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (1st campaign):
The Lights Out! competition resulted in an estimated savings of 57,958 kWh and 161,518 gallons of steam during the three months of the competition in just three buildings. Not only did this result in a decrease in immediate monetary and environmental costs, it also allowed for thousands of students, faculty and staff that occupy those three buildings to become more acquainted with concepts of energy conservation.
