A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:
The Office of Multicultural Affairs offers a number of activities for students including the following: Colors of KU is a three-day diversity retreat designed to build leadership, organizational, and other skills, with a large focus on diversity and multiculturalism. This program encourages students to foster respect, appreciation and understanding in their experience at the university as well as in the students' leadership positions. The Diversity Peer Education Team helps promote awareness about the many diversities that exist in both the college campus & Lawrence community. The team is made up of student volunteers that host discussions & activities that develop a better understanding & appreciation of our differences & similarities. Heritage Month/Week celebrations are coordinated for each heritage month or week celebrated on the KU campus. The MRC co-sponsors these programs with other university organizations to commemorate African History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, KU Pride Week, Native American Heritage Month and Asian Heriage Month. The Tunnel of Oppression creates an awareness of different types of oppression and its effects within society through an interactive experience. Through its use of audio, video and live actors, participants explore opinions, values and thoughts regarding oppression. In addition to these program, multicultural trainings are available through the for student organizations and university groups on request.
