Sustainability education, along with related community service and research, provide students with the knowledge and information they need to be prepared, enlightened, and responsible members of our increasingly complex and diverse global society. Sustainability-focused and sustainability–related courses provide the foundation for a comprehensive understanding of sustainability.
Sustainability-focused courses fully utilize sustainability and all of its interrelated principles - protecting our natural ecosystems, creating economic prosperity, and treating all people with equality and respect - or examine issues or topics using sustainability as a lens throughout the course.
Sustainability-related courses incorporate sustainability as a distinct course component or concentrate on a single sustainability principle or issue.

A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the inventory:
The course catalog was reviewed by Center for Sustainability staff to identify courses that may meet the definitions for sustainability-related and -focused courses. The compiled lists for each academic area were then sent to department chairs and directors for a final review. Courses were referenced against records to determine if there was enrollment in fall 2010, spring 2011 or summer 2011. The total number of courses offered represents all courses offered during any semester, so may contain duplicates.
