The Division of Access, Opportunity, and Diversity (DAOD) provides leadership and resources to develop culturally competent leaders and continue supporting our welcoming and respectful campus environment as articulated in the University of Iowa's strategic plan. The DOAD provides a "hub and spoke" service and staffing model to coordinate the central efforts supporting all campus units to remain in compliance with federal/state laws and maintain accreditation standards. The DAOD offices also assist efforts to recruit and retain faculty, staff, and students. The office's primary goal is to enhance a welcoming, and respectful campus environment for all.

The work of the office is rooted in mastering three core elements:

  1. Creation of a culture where all people can be productive and contribute.

  2. Cultivation of communities that are open and welcoming to all.

  3. Working with people to find common ground.

The central office and the University of Iowa strives to accomplish the following:

  • Provide an education to students, supporting their aspirations in their careers and lives.

The Inclusive Education and Strategic Initiatives (IESI) unit has offered trainings and activities for students, faculty, and staff on a variety of DEI topics. In fiscal year 2023, IESI provided over 400 hours of programming to over 4,500 participants. The university is an affiliate of the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI), a nonprofit organization providing leadership training for inclusion and equity with the goal of eliminating all forms of prejudice throughout the world. IESI held 12 NBCI workshops and opportunities attended by 189 students, faculty, staff, and community members in fiscal year 2023. IESI works with partners across campus to provide the Building University of Iowa Leadership for Diversity (BUILD) certificate series; 64 BUILD workshops reached over 1,600 faculty, staff, and graduate students in fiscal year 2023. DAOD partners with the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost to provide workshops on implicit bias in the search and hiring processes, as well as evidence-based strategies for minimizing the impact of bias in recruitment, retention, and development. In addition to these central offerings, many colleges and units offer discipline-specific trainings and opportunities, including the Carver College of Medicine and University of Iowa Health Care.
