At the Upper Midwest Association for Campus Sustainability Conference hosted on September 22nd and 23rd, 2023, Stratis Giannakouros, Director of the Office of Sustainability and the Environment, presented the initiative of the Ashton Prairie Living Laboratory in front of faculty, staff, and students of other universities. At the AASHE STARS 2023 Conference hosted from October 29-31, Stratis Giannakouros, Director of the Office of Sustainability and the Environment, and Cornelia Lang, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education in the College of Liberal Arts, presented on the University of Iowa’s initiatives to engage all undergraduate students with sustainability as a core of their education through the implementation of a general education sustainability requirement.

A brief description of the mentoring relationship and activities:

University of Iowa, University of Northern Iowa, and Iowa State University maintain close relationships and often lean on each other to assess, develop, or even collaborate on sustainability initiatives and programs.  For example, the dining programs at each school compile collective purchases for joint contracts for grease collection/mitigation, dairy supplier, convenience store items, and prime vendor. This collaborative effort allows universities to share the reduced prices that accompany sustainable purchasing like brands, volume purchasing, etc. The directors of each office of sustainabilty regularly communicate to share information, ideas, and resources as sustainability programs and initiatives are evaluated and developed.

A brief description of other inter-campus collaborative efforts around sustainability during the previous year :

The University of Iowa also participates in the Upper Midwest Association for Campus Sustainability and the Big Ten and Friends Sustainability Network. Both networks provide opportunities (e.g,. in-person meetings, zoom meetings, communities of practices, webinars, conferences, workshops) to share information and resources that assist in developing and enhancing sustainability programs.  The University of Iowa has consulted with schools, such as Iowa State University and University of Minnesota to compare programs and identify areas of opportunity.
