Iowa has been conducting culture surveys for several years, both as part of SERU and independently from the Office of Sustainability. The Office of Sustainability developed this survey in Spring 2024 to better understand sustainability at the University, meet STARS certification criteria, and provide a benchmark for tracking progress. A follow-up cultural assessment is scheduled for Spring 2025.

A brief description of how representative samples were reached (if applicable) and how the cultural assessment is administered:

The cultural assessment was administered to all students through a campus email through the University of Iowa mass mail system. Students who completed the survey had a chance to win one of three gift cards. 2,352 students responded to the survey, totaling approximately 8% of the total student population. Demographics of the response are available in the uploaded report.

A brief summary of results from the cultural assessment:

The cultural assessment focused on understanding student awareness and opinions of sustainability at the University of Iowa and general sustainability values, behaviors, and beliefs. The results indicate that around half of student respondents were unaware of major sustainability efforts on campus such as the Office of Sustainability and the Environment and the undergraduate Certificate in Sustainability. However, over 85% of student respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the University of Iowa should measure and minimize its impact on the environment. Additionally, responses show recycling is a popular sustainable behavior but composting has not been widely adopted among respondents.
