A brief description of how the literacy assessment was developed and/or when it was adopted:
The Office of Sustainability developed this survey in Spring 2024 to better understand sustainability literacy at the University, identify strengths and weaknesses, meet STARS certification criteria, and provide a benchmark for tracking progress. A follow-up (post) literacy assessment is scheduled for Spring 2025.
A brief description of how a representative sample was reached (if applicable) and how the assessment(s) were administered :
The literacy assessment was administered to all students through a campus email through the University of Iowa mass mail system. To minimize survey bias through self-selection, the subject of the survey was not included in the mass email and students were offered had a chance to win gift cards to complete the survey. 2,352 students responded to the survey, totaling approximately 8% of the total student population. Demographics of the response are available in the uploaded report.
A brief summary of results from the literacy assessment(s):
For 12 out of 15 sustainability literacy questions (80%), the answer selected most often was the correct response. However, the average percentage that survey respondents answered correctly to a question was 57.3%. The three questions most respondents answered incorrectly centered around sustainability at the University of Iowa, particularly related to energy and utilities.
