The graduate program is focused on the environmental consequences of human decisions on local, regional, and global scales and the application of GIScience to the study of these consequences. We provide leading-edge educational and research experience for professional and research-oriented graduate studies in GIScience, environmental change, health and society, and international development.

Our work addresses social justice issues like food, energy, and water for all. Students make a difference in communities with the greatest need, most notable sustainable water solutions. This program will prepare you for a career on the front lines of environmental and occupational health. Your faculty advisor will help you design a plan of study to fit your educational and professional goals. OEH MS degrees can be tailored to students’ interests. Students work with their faculty advisors to select elective coursework on topics such as environmental health, environmental toxicology, and ergonomics. You’ll graduate qualified for exciting job opportunities in local, state, or federal health agencies, and in departments of health and safety in commercial enterprises and academic institutions.

The Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Water Development (SWD) is administered by the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and classes are held partially online and at the Iowa City campus. The Graduate College grants the certificate. Admission is available to professionals looking to address future challenges of water scarcity and variability while also meeting the food and energy demands of Earth’s growing population. This Certificate leverages a unique learning environment focused on water sustainability that extends beyond any one discipline, department, or College.
