A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
Using the University of Iowa 2023-2024 General Catalog, courses were reviewed by college and then by individual programs. Titles and descriptions of courses were scanned in order to determine if a course was sustainability-focused or sustainability-inclusive. If a course was determined to be sustainability-focused or sustainability-inclusive, information about the course including subject, course number, course title, department, course level (undergraduate or graduate), whether the course was sustainability-focused or sustainability-inclusive, and the course description was recorded in a spreadsheet. In addition, if a course was offered in multiple programs or departments, it was also noted in the spreadsheet to avoid double-counting courses. Courses up to 4999 were categorized as undergraduate courses and courses 5000 and above were categorized as graduate-level courses. For the College of Engineering, graduate-level courses are 6000 and above. Program and department websites were also scanned to find tracks or lists of courses that aligned with sustainability. For example, the Tippie College of Business listed courses that contain a sustainability activity or module. All courses listed in the Sustainability Certificate were included as well. The past course submission list was also referenced. After collecting course data, emails were sent to department heads and deans about any courses that may contain sustainability topics but were not able to be determined based on the course descriptions. Based on these responses, courses were included or excluded from the list. Course data was only collected for one academic year, 2023-2024, Summer 2023, Fall 2023, & Spring 2024. Course lists from Summer 2023, Fall 2023, and Spring 2024 were combined, and duplicate courses were deleted to determine the total number of sustainability courses offered overall.
How were courses with multiple offerings or sections counted for the figures reported above?:
