Does the institution make cultural competence trainings and activities available to all students?:
Yes

A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:

The Chief Diversity Office at the University of Iowa offers training and opportunities for students to get involved and engaged in diversity-related activities on campus. Events and activities include:

Center for Student Involvement & Leadership (CSIL) - Pick one of over 450 student organizations to stay connected to campus, develop leadership skills and have fun.

Center for Diversity and Enrichment - Connects students with volunteer opportunities, student organizations, mentoring, and campus programs.

Pen Pal Program - Students write letters to West Liberty elementary 4th graders throughout the academic year. In the spring, the elementary students visit campus to meet their pen pals.

CDE Ambassadors - Involvement is based on the student's schedule and can range from serving food to serving on a student panel.

Mentoring Program - Offers peer relationship-building and support to underrepresented minority undergraduate students at the University of Iowa.

Become a Tutor - Tutoring is provided in one-on-one and small group formats.

Celebrating Cultural Diversity Festival (CCDF) - Celebrating Cultural Diversity Festival is an annual event that celebrates the different cultures that make up the University of Iowa and its surrounding communities. This year CCDF is celebrating its 23rd year of educating the community while honoring the many cultures in the area. Members of the community are invited to enjoy the fun atmosphere and learn about their peers through food, games, dance, music, literature, and much more.

Study Abroad - Opportunities to study and learn internationally exist for all Iowa students. Last year Hawkeyes in 70 different majors studied in 81 countries worldwide.

The University of Iowa has recently established an Affiliate of the National Coalition Building Institute, a non-profit group that works through a coalition-building model to provide leadership training for inclusion and equity, with the goal of eliminating prejudice throughout the world. One of the most visible and well-known programs that NCBI has created is the one-day “Welcoming Diversity and Prejudice Reduction” workshop.

The Womens Resource and Action Center at the UI offers bystander intervention training.
