A brief description of the institution’s programs that help increase the diversity of higher education faculty :
Faculty Diversity Opportunity Program (FDOP)
In 1999, the Office of the Provost established a program to aid collegiate efforts to recruit and retain faculty from underrepresented communities, with an emphasis on recruiting faculty of color. This program, now called the Faculty Diversity Opportunity Program, has been an important tool for reaching the university’s diversity goals and thereby enhancing the excellence of the University of Iowa. The program is administered by the chief diversity officer and associate vice president (CDO), who works with collegiate deans to identify potential faculty hires who would add to the diversity of the University of Iowa faculty.
Staff Diversity Opportunity Program (SDOP)
Reflecting best practices identified from the Faculty Diversity Opportunity Program, the Staff Diversity Opportunity Program promotes employment of minorities and women in Professional and Scientific (P&S) staff classifications exhibiting underrepresentation. Administered through the Office of Central Human Resources, SDOP allows opportunity for the development of talent through apprenticeships, internships, pipeline positions, and other hires that enable the university to bring on board high potential, diverse candidates who do not fill a specific, immediate need, as well as for development opportunities to increase the new employee’s skill, knowledge, abilities, and likelihood of a successful candidacy for future P&S vacancies.
Diversity Councils
Several faculty and staff organizations that promote diversity on our campus are supported by the Chief Diversity Office.
African American Council
The African American Council (AAC) strives to improve the quality of life for African American faculty, staff and students at the University of Iowa. By promoting recognition of achievement, cultural exchange, and public service, the AAC encourages individuals to advance in their careers, build meaningful personal relationships, and address needs beyond the UI.
Council on Disability Awareness
The mission of the Council on Disability Awareness is to advocate for the full development and maintenance of an attitudinal and physical environment that encourages people with disabilities to participate fully in the educational, occupational, social, and cultural life of the University of Iowa.
Council on the Status of Women
The mission of the Council on the Status of Women (CSW) is to ensure an environment that supports the rights of all women at the University of Iowa. The council is committed to working in partnership with the university to develop policies that remove barriers to women’s learning, professional growth, creativity, employment, and contributions to the institution and to the broader community.
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Staff & Faculty Association
The LGBSFA is open to any university employee - merit staff, professional/scientific staff, graduate assistant, faculty, administrator or community member. Meetings are held monthly and feature guest presentations as well as discussions of current topics recommended by members. In addition, the association sponsors other public activities throughout the year ranging from lectures to cultural performances and social events.
Native American Council
The mission of the Native American Council (NAC) is to promote and improve the quality of life of Native American faculty, staff, and students at the University of Iowa.
The goals of the NAC are to: address the diverse needs and concerns of Native Americans on campus; act as a voice for Native faculty, staff, and students; serve as a formalized liaison between Native staff and faculty, and students, and the greater University of Iowa communities; and support university efforts towards recruitment, retention of Native faculty, staff and graduation of students.
UI Latino Council
The Latino Council’s mission is to create a university environment that addresses the needs and concerns of Latino faculty and staff, to keep abreast of issues affecting UI Latino students and to serve as an advisory body to the university.
The Hubbard Group
The Hubbard Group was created to address the individual, institutional, and environmental concerns of African American male students, faculty and staff.
Office of Graduate Inclusion
OGI’s mission is to recruit and retain graduate students from all walks of life while encouraging academic curiosity and discovery. As a community, OGI students share responsibility; individually and collectively to achieve the goals of inclusiveness with the help of faculty and staff mentors.
Celebrating Cultural Diversity Festival
Since 1990, CCDF has given members of the University of Iowa and its surrounding communities an opportunity to learn about each other through food, games, dance, music, literature, storytelling, arts and crafts. Planning a big event like this is done with the help of faculty, staff, and students who volunteer their time either to participate on the planning committee, or volunteer on the day of the event.
