A brief description of how the assessment was developed:

The sustainability assessment was developed by the University of Iowa Center for Evaluation and Assessment (CEA), which received funding from a Department of Education grant (FIPSE) titled Campus Living-Learning Communities for the Sustainable Citizen.

A brief description of how the assessment was administered:

The assessment was administered to the students enrolled in the Introduction to Sustainability course, which is required to obtain the Certificate in Sustainability. Students completed the assessment at the end of the semester to assess changes in students' attitudes and behaviors, as well as gauge the student's knowledge of course themes.

A brief summary of results from the assessment:

Excerpt from the CEA's evaluation report of the survey results
"Overall, students reported some level of growth in the perception of their attitudes, skills, and behaviors as a result of Introduction to Sustainability in all areas surveyed... Students perceived their own growth to be greatest in the following four areas (1) recognizing that human population, carrying capacity and the fate of resources held-in-common are key elements to understanding sustainability; (2) participating in service learning project at [the] university and local community; (3) understanding that companies that are sustainable are more likely to be profitable over the long term; and (4) influencing people toward a sustainability mindset."
