Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Q Magazine
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Q Magazine features outstanding articles by University of Illinois students, primarily originating from class efforts in our Certificate in Environmental Writing. Students have the opportunity to submit their work for publication in Q, working closely with instructors and production staff to develop their work to a professional, publishable standard. The resulting magazine is a professional university publication focused on longreads and high-impact writing that is fully edited and developed by students and focused entirely on sustainability issues, challenges, and opportunities.
The motto of the CEW is “turning data into narrative” — to learn about the latest scientific research on the environment and how to communicate that research effectively to the public. Certificate courses offer students the opportunity to write about environmental issues they are passionate about, and to engage the latest on-campus research in sustainability science. Whether dropping in to take one of our courses, or completing the full three-course sequence, students work with dedicated professors, meet enthusiastic students from other disciplines all across campus, and build marketable skills in environmental communication.
