The Office of Civic Life (formerly the Office of Volunteer Programs) cultivates community partnerships that are designed to give students multiple entries to explore pathways to community involvement, global awareness, and civic responsibility. We play a vital role in shaping the development of Illinois students through creation and implementation of intentional co-curricular and curricular programs, professional development activities, service education, and reflection. Civic Life will enable students to realize, discuss, and address critical, societal issues and gain the knowledge and capacity to be lifelong agents of change worldwide. Community Service participation is central to the education mission at Illinois. More than 10,000 courses include community service as part of the curriculum. In addition, students have the opportunity to volunteer through the Office of Volunteer Programs and many fraternities and sororities are involved in community service efforts. Further, Illinois hosts more than 140 registered student organizations that are classified as service-oriented. Acquiring data regarding the number of students and hours is a challenge since these numbers are not tracked centrally; the actual number is much higher in all likelihood than what's reflected in Part 2 of this credit.
