INDIGO collects, disseminates, and provides persistent and reliable access to the research and scholarship of faculty, staff, and students at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Faculty, staff, and graduate students can deposit their research and scholarship - unpublished and, in many cases, published - directly into INDIGO. Departments can use INDIGO to distribute their working papers, data sets, technical reports, or other research material.

Each Faculty member, for the purpose of making his or her scholarly articles widely and freely available in an open access repository, grants to the University of Illinois a nonexclusive, irrevocable, worldwide license to exercise any and all rights under copyright relating to each of his or her scholarly articles, in any medium, and to authorize others to do the same. Any other systematic uses of the licensed articles by the University of Illinois must be approved by the Campus Senate. This policy does not transfer copyright ownership, which generally remains with Faculty authors under existing University of Illinois General Rules (Article III. Section 4(a)).

The UIC Research Open Access Publishing Fund supports faculty, researchers, staff, post-docs, and students who want to make their journal articles free to all readers immediately upon publication, but are not supported by grants or contracts with funds to help cover open access or paid access publishing fees. The ROAAP fund provides financial support towards open access fees in open access journals.

The University Library of the University of Illinois at Chicago is committed to assisting with the dissemination of scholarly activities and supporting open access publishing. As such, the Library established the Journals@UIC publishing program to advance scholarly knowledge in a cost-effective manner. Journals@UIC provides the storage, software, application expertise, and training required for scholars to host and publish their own open access scholarly journals. Journals@UIC accepts both new journals and existing journals.
