The University is committed to vendor diversification by ensuring that diverse businesses (see definition) are included in the University procurement process. The Supplier Diversity Program provides access to procurement opportunities by creating an equitable and competitive business environment through encouraging campus departments to proactively consider qualified certified businesses owned by minorities, females and persons with disabilities for their contracting needs.the mission of Supplier Diversity is to expand procurement opportunities to businesses that have been historically underrepresented in the procurement process by increasing utilization of businesses owned by minorities, females and persons with disabilities to at least 20% of allowable University expenditures and 3% for veteran owned businesses.
The State of Illinois declares that it is the public policy of the State to promote and encourage the continuing economic development of minority, female and persons with disabilities owned businesses and are provided the opportunity to participate in the State's procurement process as both prime and subcontractors.
Strategic Procurement for the university uses a Supplier Sustainability Questionnaire when it puts out a Bid/Proposal. It is applicable to firms that provide services and goods.

The Sustainability Standards within the Building Standards state that new construction and renovation projects must incorporate a minimum of 10% recycled materials, calculated using the sum of the post consumer content plus half the per-consumer content, based on the cost of these materials. Use locally produced/manufactured products, not compromising on quality and cost. Based on cost, incorporate 2.5% rapidly renewable materials in to the total materials cost as practically as possible.

The Guidelines for Conservation with Computer and Office Equipment developed by UIC's Academic Computing and Communication Center address recycled content and energy usage when procuring computers and office equipment. They also address the energy conservation settings for computers, data center set-up, printer consolidation, and proper disposal of electronics.
