The Office of Community Engagement And Neighborhood Health Partnerships (OCEAN-HP) represents a diverse network of partnerships between the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), a land-grant institution, and organizations in the neighborhoods adjacent to UIC or near University-sponsored, community-based facilities. OCEAN-HP is a major vehicle through which the University fulfills its Great Cities Commitment. Our programs and activities have a particular emphasis on students, faculty and staff engagement in long-term, meaningful relationships with communities. We have a campus-wide focus that extends to all UIC colleges.

OCEAN-HP brings together the expertise, resources and wisdom of the communities with that of the university to first understand and then respond to the contextual needs of communities. Working as neighbors, OCEAN-HP facilitates relationships that enhance both community and university leadership and organizational capacity. Through partnerships, we contribute to neighborhood revitalization through teaching, research, and service that focuses on measurable improvements in educational outcomes, health status, economic conditions, physical environment and safety among other important issues. Green Economic Industrial Development
The Center will strengthen the linkage between communities in the corridor and regional economic development goals by advancing a Green Economic Industrial Corridor (GEIC) plan that will attract the best mix of uses to highly polluted areas that can advance the regional economy while improving the environment.
Workforce Development
The Center will address the mismatch between employer needs and labor force skills by helping current successful workforce development strategies grow in scale to meet the needs of employers now, and by developing new, targeted training and skills building efforts for future green manufacturing opportunities in the corridor.
