Sustainability has been defined by the World Commission on Environment and Development (the Brundtland Commission) as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It is often described as having three interacting components: environmental, economic and social. It promotes, above all, a different way of thinking about how humans relate to their environment.
Sustainability‐focused courses concentrate on sustainability, including its social, economic, and environmental and ecological health dimensions, or examine an issue or topic using sustainability as a lens. Example: A political science class about Africa examines the economic, social and environmental challenges to those countries in the post-Colonial era.
Sustainability‐related courses include modules on at least one of the components of sustainability. Example: A civil engineering course includes a module on “green” building techniques.

Two years ago department heads were surveyed for courses. A small response was received. This list, however, served as a starting point for review by the Office of Sustainability and several students of the course catalog and descriptions to create a list of course offerings. These courses will be submitted to the departments for their review and approval prior to posting on the internet.
