Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Bioregional Planning and Community Design program (BIOP)
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Jaap Vos, Director of the University of Idaho Urban Design Center and Program Head of Bioregional Planning and Community Design (BIOP) teaches courses which address part 4, section 14 of the Earth Charter. The outcomes BIOP “Integrate into formal education and life-long learning the knowledge, values, and skills needed for a sustainable way of life” and “Provide all, especially children and youth, with educational opportunities that empower them to contribute actively to sustainable development”.
Idaho is currently the fastest growing state in the US but it has very limited capacity to deal with this growth in a way that will lead to sustainable communities. The BIOP program, therefore, offers all planning courses now in a virtual environment which allows both traditional students and decision-makers (and citizens) throughout the state to take these courses and increase their knowledge about creating sustainable communities.
Switching courses from regular to a virtual environment was started in 2016 and will continue.
