A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory (including the types of faculty and staff included as researchers):
As a first approximation one-third of UI faculty engage in sustainability research/scholarship. A survey conducted of the chairs of all academic units in April/May of 2017 found that of the 314 faculty members accounted for (52% of instructional and research faculty) in the survey that 101 (32%) had engaged in sustainability research/scholarship. As of the fall of 2015 UI employed a total of 705 employees with faculty status: 553 instructional, 56 research, and 96 public services. (https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/datacenter/InstitutionProfile.aspx?unitId=acafadadb3b0). Assuming that 32% of the remaining instructional and research faculty not accounted for in the April/May survey engaged in sustainability research/scholarship this would be an additional 95 faculty; for an estimated 196 total faculty engaged in sustainability research/scholarship. The spreadsheet with the survey results has been uploaded.
