Optional Fields

A brief description of the institution's approach to plant stewardship:
There is an increasing desire amongst the campus community to increase the number of native Hawaiian plants on campus and a variety of different groups have been planting native Hawaiian plants. Botany classes have planted a small area between Hale 'Imiloa and Hale Uluwehi with native Hawaiian plants. The Hawaiian wood carving program has planted native Hawaiian plants and canoe plants around Hale Iolani while the Hawaiian Studies program have planted canoe and native Hawaiian plants around Hale A'o. In 2019, 25 native trees were planted throughout campus through a grant from the Arbor Day Foundation.

A brief description of the institution's approach to hydrology and water use:
Due to the geographical location of the campus on the Windward side of campus, the abundant natural rain levels have taken away the need for artificial irrigation systems. All campus landscaping relies currently on natural rain-fall. A few projects including the Rain Garden by Hale 'Imiloa have also been implemented to control rain run-off from carrying toxins into the nearby streams and coral reefs in Kane'ohe Bay.

A brief description of the institution's approach to landscape materials management and waste minimization:
Windward Community College has a landscape plan that shapes policies and practices around landscape maintenance protocols.

A brief description of the institution's approach to energy-efficient landscape design:
There have not been conscious efforts to purposefully design landscapes for energy efficiencies though some of the larger monkey pod and banyan trees do provide shade for certain building and reduce cooling costs.

A brief description of other sustainable landscape management practices employed by the institution:
There are a number of gardens on campus that are used as opportunities to teach students about agriculture and medicine including the Agro-pharmotech garden, Lau Lapa'au garden, and the Hawaiian Studies garden.
