Hawaiian Studies is inherently sustainability focused due to countless ties between the culture and the land. Students in with this degree learn about Native Hawaiian Land Management systems, the value of water, the devastating ecological effects of the continued American occupation, the ties between language to the land, the ties between religion to the land, and the overall understanding that Hawaiian Culture is heavily influenced by being good stewards of their home.

Associate in Arts - Hawaiian Studies Windward CCʻs associate in arts degree in Hawaiian Studies was collaboratively developed by the community college campuses as an option to prepare you to transfer to a Hawaiian Studies baccalaureate degree path at UH Mānoa, UH West Oʻahu or UH Hilo. It marks the first time a degree was approved for all the University of Hawaiʻi's seven community colleges. The A.A. in Hawaiian Studies also allows you to get a foundation in Hawaiian knowledge and practices while also preparing to go into other major areas at the baccalaureate level. The open science and social science areas and the 12 credits of open elective space allow for students to get a grounding in Hawaiian Studies while also finishing core courses in other areas of concentration. Additionally, the A.A. in Hawaiian Studies can offer you the option to earn an associate degree that provides the qualifications that would be beneficial in the workforce where knowledge of the host culture is desired. You have an opportunity to follow a path of Hawaiian knowledge that, once you graduate, will allow you to take that knowledge into the workforce and back to your communities.

Upon successful completion of the associate in arts degree in Hawaiian studies, the student will be able to:
-Describe aboriginal Hawaiian linguistic, cultural, historical, and political concepts.
-Apply aboriginal Hawaiian concepts, knowledge and methods to the areas of science, humanities, arts, and social sciences—in academics and in other professional endeavors.
-Engage, articulate, and analyze topics relevant to the aboriginal Hawaiian community using college-level research and writing methods.

The Academic Subject Certificate in Sustainability provides students with an interdisciplinary introduction to core concepts of sustainability. This certificate is part of a system-wide effort to build sustainability content across a wide variety of courses through Sustainability or S-designated courses, as proposed and described by the UH Executive Sustainability Policy, EP 4.202 and the Windward Community College Sustainability Plan.

This certificate will prepare students to transfer to UHWO: BAS in Sustainable Community Food Systems, UHMC: BAS in Sustainability Science Management, or the UHM: Interdisciplinary Studies BA in Sustainability, Hawaiian Studies BA in Hawaiian Studies, Mālama ʻĀina "track." Perhaps more importantly, it will help students to understand the interdisciplinary nature and relevance of sustainability in any major and career.

Upon successful completion of this certificate, students will be able to:
-Define sustainability on local, national, and international levels.
-Identify the personal values and attitudes that can facilitate sustainable living.
-Describe how the individual relates to the wider issues of sustainability.
-Measure one’s impact on the triple bottom line: People, Planet, Profit.
-Identify the sociocultural values and attitudes that facilitate sustainable living at the local, regional and global levels.
-Apply concepts of sustainability to local, regional and/or global challenges.
-Demonstrate how concepts of sustainability are connected to local, regional and global issues.
-Describe how traditional and indigenous perspectives inform practices of sustainability.

The ASC in Bio-Resources and Technology (Bio-Resource Development and Management) will prepare students for careers in environmental science/studies and qualify them to transfer to bachelor of science degree programs. Knowledge and training in Bio-Resource Development and Management will be an asset to the productive and efficient use of natural resources for promoting sustainable management of our environment.

This certificate will consist of 26 credits. See course descriptions for prerequisites.

Program Outcomes:

-Integrate basic environmental science concepts with traditional and modern resource management practices in recommending environmental management decisions.
-Exhibit best management practices when extracting and utilizing natural resources.
-Design and implement an environmental study.
-Effectively use laboratory and field instrumentation to collect data.
-Analyze and interpret environmental data.
-Write an objective technical report involving the presentation and analysis of environmental data.

The Certificate of Completion in Sustainable Agriculture is a 17-credit certificate designed for students who want to engage is small-scale farming in Hawai‘i. Sustainable agriculture integrates long-term environmental stability with economic profitability in way that focuses on stewardship of both human and physical resources. In contrast to the ways of farming that have become typical in the last century, sustainable agriculture focuses on reducing energy and resource demands, removing harmful chemicals and by-products of farming, and using alternative processes, such as aquaponics, to create a viable farm.

Upon completion of the Certificate of Completion in Sustainable Agriculture, the student will be able to:

-Evaluate sustainable farming systems and business plans
-Determine the sustainable farming system suited for a specific location in Hawai‘i
-Recommend cultural practices, solve problems and cultivate horticultural crops in a sustainable manner based on sound biological and technological principles
