Kūkalahale Project
A brief description of the employee educators program (1st program):
Kūkalahale Project is a Hawaiian Culture-Based Professional development program offered to faculty, staff, and administrators, with the goal of supporting their ability to infuse Hawaiian culture, traditions, and values into their work. The program started on October 1, 2019, and builds on the successes of Hoʻāla Hou. Hoʻāla Hou is the predecessor of the Kūkalahale Project which had a similar goal and effect on Honolulu Community College employees. The overarching theme of this collaborative project is indigenous education frameworks in professional development. The program embodies sustainability because Hawaiian culture is centered around mālama ‘āina (caring for the land). This is shown through the program building partnerships with environmental organizations, establishing wahi pana (places of significance) to support a sense of place on each campus, and many of the Kūkalahale Project activities are restoration work and Hawaiian culture environmental education programs. One of the goals of this program is to engage the learner with the 'āina (land/earth). At the conclusion of the program, participants create an action plan that encompasses how the program participant can incorporate their holistic culture and place-based learning strategies, including their sustainability work, into their specific roles on campus. The action plan also must include how they will measure the impact of their work. There are varying levels of commitment to this program. Employees can choose between any of the workshops that are held throughout the year, the Hoʻomōhalu program which is a one-week symposium at the beginning of each semester, or the E Hoʻi Nā Wai which begins with a two-day orientation at the beginning of the year and meets monthly throughout the school year. This program is run and led by Paul Kalani Kaʻawa Flores and other HonCC Staff.
A brief description of the employee educators program’s target audience (1st program):
Honolulu Community College faculty, staff, and administrators. The program works to not only support instructional staff but all employees on campus. The program director, Paul Kalani Flores believes that every position on campus has a direct impact on students, thus all employees should have these opportunities.
