Academic Subject Certificate ( ASC) in Sustainability

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program:
This certificate provides students with an interdisciplinary understanding of core concepts in environmental and sustainability studies. Achieving this certificate connects students with an interest in sustainability to relevant courses, research, community-based applications, transfer opportunities and emerging career fields. This certificate will prepare students to pursue UH system certificate and 4-year degree programs related to sustainability.

To receive this credential, the student must complete a minimum of 13 credits and a maximum of 15 credits, depending if students take lab classes. All courses must be Sustainability Focused (SF) to apply to certificate. A capstone project under a faculty mentor is also required. Honolulu Community College currently offers a sufficient number and range of Sustainability Focused courses to provide an academically rigorous certificate. New courses are certified each academic year.

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (2nd program):
The Hawaiian Studies program is inherently sustainability focused due to the Hawaiian culture's inherent focus on Mālama 'Āina (to care for the land), which is engrained or underlying in most everything in Hawaiian culture. Students in this program are educated in Native Hawaiian Land Management systems, the value of water, the devastating ecological effects of the continued foreign occupation, the ties between language to the land, the ties between religion to the land, and the overall understanding that Hawaiian Culture is heavily influenced by being good stewards of their home.

The Hawaiian Studies Associate in Arts Degree (AA) is a two-year Baccalaureate direct transfer Associate in Arts degree consisting of a minimum of 60 semester credits at the 100 and 200 levels. The Associate in Arts in Hawaiian Studies is designed for students who are preparing to transfer to a four year college or university and who have an interest in achieving a qualification that would be beneficial in the workforce or other areas of study where a foundational knowledge of the Native Hawaiian host culture can complement their worldview.

The Liberal Arts program offers a wide range of courses in subject areas in Humanities, Kulana Hawai‘i (Hawaiian Studies), Language Arts, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. Each of these subject areas requires students to demonstrate an understanding of the natural environment of the planet and learn to utilize natural resources sustainably. Sustainability is woven into the interdisciplinary curriculum of the liberal arts program. The program ensures all students have the structure, resources, and leadership to put sustainability at the forefront of their degree.

The Liberal Arts Associate in Arts Degree (AA) is a two-year Baccalaureate associate in Arts degree consisting of a minimum of 60 academic credits. The courses at the 100- and 200-level meet the University of Hawai‘i general education requirements, and may be applied towards a four-year baccalaureate degree.The program also provides courses that meet pre-major requirements in many areas in the arts and sciences, as well as courses that meet pre-professional requirements (College of Business, College of Education, College of Social Sciences, College of Natural Sciences, etc.)
