A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:
I Ola Hāloa Center for Hawaiʻi Life Styles aims to provide Hawaiʻi Community College, its students, families, and communities with Hawaiian cultural learning and teaching programs from which they can successfully foundation their intellectual, spiritual, and economic base. I Ola Hāloa reaffirms the importance of Hawaiian cultural Values and practices in higher education Begun in 1999 through a grant sponsored by the Native Hawaiian-Serving Institutions Program of the U.S. Department of Education’s Title III office, the initial activities of the project were designed to improve access, retention and graduation of Native Hawaiʻi students.

I Ola Hāloa hosts a degree program, an Academic Subject Certificate, workshops for faculty, staff, and students, support for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander students, and more.

Name of a second highlighted sustainability program/initiative/accomplishment:
Sustainability Academic Subject Certificate

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:
The Sustainability Academic Subject Certificate was launched in 2021 by the Academic Sustainability Committee. Like sustainability itself, the certificate is multidisciplinary. In order to achieve this 12-credit, minor equivalent, certificate, students must complete one Sustainability Focused class in the following departments: Hawaiian Studies, Social Sciences, and Math and Natural Sciences, plus one more Sustainability Focused class of their choice. This Certificate encompasses Hawaiʻiʻs geography and traditional sustainable practices, climate change and mitigation science, aloha ʻāina, and more. Students in Sustainability Focused classes have opportunities for service and experiential learning.

Pālamanui Campus: LEED Platinum Rating

A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:
The Hawai‘i Community College – Pālamanui campus earned a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum rating from the U.S. Green Building Council, the highest rating possible in the sustainable building program. The campus earned the LEED Platinum rating by incorporating numerous sustainable design elements in the facility. This includes on-site photovoltaics for electricity; efficient use of water, including a “living machine” natural wastewater recycling system; certified sustainable wood; low-emitting paints and adhesives; and much more.

The campus opened to the public in 2015 and serves approximately 500 students.
