The Institute for Sustainability and Resilience (ISR) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa aims to help Hawaiʻi meet our local and global obligations to environmental sustainability, with an emphasis on promoting well-being from the lens of community resilience.
ISR provides a campus-wide focus for instructional, research and outreach programs relating to sustainability and resilience in Hawaiʻi, as lessons from our islands can help provide global solutions. ISR and the ISR Director provide a platform for campus-wide coordination within multiple sustainable areas, notably curriculum coordination and development, campus-wide sustainability engagement, and sustainability-focused research.
Notable ISR accomplishments are launching an interdisciplinary BA in Sustainability via Interdisciplinary Studies, launching an interdisciplinary certificate in Sustainability, collaborating with the City & County of Honolulu to launch its first Climate Action Plan (see resilientoahu.org), released in April 2020.
The ISR Director also serves as UH Mānoa's representative to the System Sustainability Curriculum Coordination Council (SSCCC).

The UH (System) Office of Sustainability is responsible for broad sustainability coordination for the entire 10-campus university system.
The UH (System) Office of Sustainability functions as a backbone organization, working with across UH campuses to complement, support and enhance the existing sustainability work under way, and to provide coordination capacity for campuses to share information and resources with each other to accelerate action to strengthen the environmental, social, cultural and economic health of our islands’ communities.
The Sustainability Curriculum Coordination Council (SSCCC) was established by EP 4.202 to provide coordination, support and advice to the campuses regarding scholarly, scientific and community-engaged research projects in sustainability; integrating sustainability into existing courses across the curriculum; developing new sustainability courses, programs, certificates and degrees; and supporting and assisting current sustainability degree programs to evolve, excel and flourish. The SSCCC reports directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, however lacks any full-time staff or credit release time to support its function.
