A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:

A student graduate assistant in the UHM Institute for Sustainability and Resilience copied and pasted a comprehensive list of all faculty who conduct researchers, including professors, researchers and specialists from the UH website. Adjunct professors and instructors were omitted along with all other staff members. The student then copied and pasted keywords on research interests from department websites for each faculty member. The student used the same keyword list that was created for AC-1 with a couple minor edits. The keyword search included sustainability-inclusive keywords related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The SDG keywords were largely drawn from research completed by the University of Toronto students, titled “Expanding Student Engagement in Sustainability: Using SDG- and CEL-Focused Inventories to Transform Curriculum at the University of Toronto.” Their research report outlines the methodology of choosing keywords related to each of the UN SDGs. For the STARS report, the student graduate assistant built upon the 68 keywords outlined in their research paper and added 24 keywords that included more Hawaii-specific terms in line with SDGs, as well as other keywords that closely matched the SDG keywords. The student then screened the list for accuracy, removing any that were obvious mistakes.

For the number of departments, the student used excel to generate a list of departments, and then omitted any departments that did not include at least one researcher who had been identified in the keyword search. The student found that out of 69 listed departments, only 7 did not include a researcher that had been identified as having sustainability research interests.
