Diversity Advisory Council ---The UGA Diversity Advisory Council is an advisory board with responsibility to the Provost via the Associate Provost for Institutional Diversity/Chief Diversity Officer. The UGA Diversity Advisory Council serves as a broad-based advisory group with representation by the major components of the university so as to have a voice from students, staff, faculty, and administrators. This council reports to the Associate Provost for Institutional Diversity/Chief Diversity Officer. The Mission of the Diversity Advisory Council ---The Diversity Advisory Council (DAC) will assist the Office of Institutional Diversity (OID) in the design and implementation of strategies that advance and enhance diversity at UGA. The council will advise the associate provost in issues related to diversity and inclusion on this campus. This council should identify the barriers to achieving greater diversity at UGA and provide recommendations on how to overcome those barriers. ---The council, through its committee structure, will study the diversity literature research and review models in order to propose best practices and strategies that improve diversity at UGA. In addition, the council will provide public campus forums for the discussion of diversity-related issues and ideas and promote a campus dialogue about diversity with a particular focus on ensuring a sense of inclusion. Current Members The 2016-2017 Diversity Advisory Council members are: ---Diane Miller, Director of Student Academic Services in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences; ---Dawn D. Bennett-Alexander, an Associate Professor in the Terry College of Business; ---Dr. Paige Carmichael, a Professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine; ---Victoria David, Director of the Office of Diversity Affairs in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; ---Janette Hill, a Professor in the College of Education; ---Jan D. Hudson, a Human Resources Manager in the University Libraries; ---Hilda Kurtz, an Associate Professor in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences; ---Bill McDonald, Dean of Students; ---Charles Orgbon III, a Student Representative ---Raye Rawls, a Senior Public Service Associate in the J. W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development; ---Alexia Ridley, Reporter/Anchor for WUGA-FM 91.7/97.9 FM; ---Tim Samples, an Assistant Professor in the Terry College of Business; ---Ernest Webster, a Business Development Coordinator in the Division of Finance and Administration.

Workshops & Consulting ---The Office of Institutional Diversity provides workshops and consulting to promote inclusion by offering strategies to create a welcoming climate. Workshops and seminars are interactive, providing participants with opportunities to engage in discussion and activities that further their understanding of diversity and inclusion at the University of Georgia. Training Workshops can be customized to meet the needs of the unit/department/group. Some examples of training are: ---Diversity in the Workplace ---Effective communication with diverse groups ---Creating an Inclusive Classroom ---Cultural Competence ---Diversity 101 Consulting OID faculty and staff are also available to consult with units and departments to address issues of diversity in order to improve the cultural climate of the work setting, serve and consult on search committees, and provide guidance and referrals as needed. http://diversity.uga.edu/index.php/programs/article/workshops-consulting ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Certificate in Diversity & Inclusion ---The Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) creates an opportunity for faculty and staff to explore strategic areas around diversity and improve their ability to contribute to the enhancement of UGA’s welcoming and inclusive environment. ---The CDI is a partnership between the Office of Institutional Diversity, Training and Career Development (Human Resources) and other diversity-related offices and programs across the institution. It enables participants to get a closer look at the people, institutions and initiatives that play a key role in supporting and fostering diversity at UGA. This closer look will potentially provide faculty and staff with additional resources through which they can both build their diversity competencies and identify areas of diversity partnership across the institution. ---Enrollment in the courses listed for the Certificate for Diversity and Inclusion are open to all UGA faculty and staff. UGA employees may take courses in pursuit of the certificate or they may take individual courses based on their needs and interests. ---Successful completion of the CDI requires completion of the core course and five elective courses in the program. A variety of courses will be offered each quarter and all of the courses in the program are free. Courses: ---Core Course: Diversity @ UGA: Beyond the Numbers ---Elective Courses: ---LGBT Perspectives ---Non-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment Policy ---True Colors: Engaging Your Personality Style to Embrace Diversity ---Disability and Access Awareness ---Effective Communications in Diverse Groups http://diversity.uga.edu/index.php/programs/article/diversity-and-inclusion ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) at UGA ---The National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) at UGA aims to promote awareness and increase campus community members’ capacity to address difficult issues of diversity. ---NCBI@UGA is an affiliate of the National Coalition Building Institute, a non-profit leadership training organization founded in 1984 to work with colleges, universities and local agencies to build inclusive environments and eliminate prejudice. The NCBI@UGA campus team, led by Talmadge C. Guy, consists of 20 faculty, students and staff trained as facilitators to provide diversity workshops that focus on increasing cultural competence, promoting collaboration and partnerships, and building effects of relationships within and across group identities. ---The NCBI diversity/prejudice reduction workshop is an interactive, participatory program designed to promote awareness and increased sensitivity to the many similarities and differences among individuals and groups in society. NCBI@UGA is sponsored by the Office of Institutional Diversity.
