UGA engages in teaching and outreach to encourage stormwater best-management-practices in the greater community. The website for additional information can be found at http://stormwater.uga.edu and http://sustainability.uga.edu/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/UGA-Watershed-Management-Plan-2013.pdf.
UGA has installed 17 cisterns, approximately 72 rain gardens and other structural BMPs (including vegetative swales), 4 vegetated roofs, porous pavement, and converted more than 50 acres of formerly on-campus paved areas into green space in order to mitigate the negative effects of stormwater runoff.

A brief description of the institution's living or vegetated roof:
UGA currently has an existing green roof on the Geology-Georgraphy Building. This green roof was installed in the 1960's at teh time the facility was constructed to serve as a control for the Climatology Research Lab. Now the lab shares this space with the Athens Urban Food Collective, a Geography course and program that is using the green roof to grow food.

The Lamar Dodd School Art building has an approximately 3400 s.f. extensive green roof atop a large auditorium. The roof is visible from inside the building via a stairwell, printmaking studio, and MFA studios.

There is a vegetated roof research site on the Science Library-Boyd Hall Graduate Studies building which studied effectiveness of extensive green roofs at mitigating stormwater runoff and urban heat island effect.

Since 1998, UGA has prioritized bio-retention and infiltration strategies to mitigate the effects of stormwater runoff. Approximately 60 bio-retention areas (rain-gardens) are installed throughout UGA's campus.

A brief description of other technologies or strategies for stormwater management employed:
UGA has installed 17 cisterns with more than 550,000 gallons of storage capacity. These cisterns help divert stormwater away from streams and creeks during high-rainfall events and are used for irrigation around campus facilities. UGA's watershed management program details best management practices as well as current and proposed methods.
