A brief description of the postconsumer food waste composting program:
All organic waste leaving campus dining halls is composted at the UGA Bioconversion Center. The program diverts approximately 10,000 pounds of organic waste from the local landfill each week. The program is a partnership with UGA Food Services, UGA Faciltities Managemetn Division Services, Grounds and Office of Sustainability. In addition, composting is offered to UGA departments participating in the Green Office Program. This program is managed by the Office of Sustianability. Compost collection is completed by a student intern using an electric vehicle powered by a solar charging station at UGArden Learning & Demonstration Farm. Coffee grounds, produce and paper towels are collected from participating department's break room and delivered to UGArden for composting.
