Samantha Joye, a professor in the Department of Marine Sciences, studied the water column and seafloor impacts of the 2010 BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill. CNN published an article about her contributions, referring to her as "a spokeswoman for the deep ocean."
Professor Jenna Jambeck of the College of Engineering has conducted research to estimate the amount of plastic waste in the earth's oceans. She also developed a Marine Debris Tracker app to collect data on ocean debris and educate the public about the harmful impacts of littering.
