Facilities - Energy and Sustainability. Facilities Management first took responsibility for sustainability at UD in 2008 with the hiring of UD's first Sustainability Manager. Group reports to the Vice President for Facilities Management and Planning. The office identifies and promotes sustainable solutions that reduce environmental impacts while supporting an equitable and prosperous University of Dayton, now and into the future. As a signatory to Second Nature's Carbon and Resilience Commitments, we are guided by the University's commitment to carbon neutrality, climate adaptation, and community capacity building to deal with a changing climate. The office approaches its work in the Marianist tradition of collaborating for adaptation and change by building bridges with faculty, staff, and students from across campus to creatively address our campus sustainability and energy challenges. It support the University's vibrant learning community by providing hands-on learning opportunities for students in the areas of waste reduction, energy, conservation, climate resilience, mitigation and adaptation, procurement, landscape and environmental quality, food, and more. Facilities has three full time employees specifically dedicated to sustainability: Executive Director of Energy Utilization and Environmental Sustainability, Sustainability & Energy Coordinator, and a Sustainability Planning and Evaluation Manager.

Institution-wide coordination

A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:
The Energy and Sustainability office in Facilities Management serves in a campus-wide coordinating and consultation role and is responsible for implementing and coordinating sustainability initiatives campus wide. This includes engaging faculty and students and providing hands-on learning opportunities for students in the areas of waste reduction, energy, conservation, climate resilience, mitigation and adaptation, procurement, landscape and environmental quality, food, and more.
The Hanley Sustainability Institute has hosted events, sponsored research, and employed students working in sustainability across campus. See our 2021 annual report for a list of activities and accomplishments: https://udayton.edu/blogs/udhsi/21-03-31-impact-report.php
Coordination between the two offices is established through joint participation on multiple campus committees and working groups.
Through the work of campus-wide coordination of these offices in concert with the GRF and FESS committees, CO2 emissions have declined 6.8% through retrocommissioning all buildings, and lighting and thermostat upgrades; we are beginning on-site full-scale organics composting; established a campus garden supplying 800+ pounds of food to campus dining and 11 acres of native pollinator areas; developed a "Procurement for the Common Good" strategy; launched a sustainability major; and deepened campus-as-lab research opportunities.
