Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Okanagan Charter

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

The University of Connecticut adopted the Okanagan Charter: An International Charter for Health Promoting Universities and Colleges. Building upon UConn’s previous public health work it aims to further include wellness as a focus of UConn students, faculty, staff, and the broader community. Additionally, it is supported by the fact that UConn is a JED Campus which is the predecessor of the Okanagan charter, A JED campus believes in a comprehensive, public health approach and provides a framework to enhance student well-being and to prevent substance use issues and suicide. These two commitments demonstrate UConn’s commitment to wellbeing, as an integrated component of campus culture including administration, operations, and academic mandates. The adoption of the Okanagan Charter emerged out of Mental Health Taskforce which produced an executive report in 2020. As a signatory to the Charter there will be subsequent action including student and staff engagement through a Health Promoting University Steering Committee which is currently being launched.
