Land Use Acdemy's Commissioner Training

As of January 1, 2023, planning and zoning commissioners in the State of Connecticut are required to complete at least four hours of training as required under the Section 8-4c of Connecticut General Statutes.

UConn CLEAR, in collaboration with OPM, has set up a statewide Land Use Commissioner Training Calendar to help towns and commissioners locate training opportunities in line with these requirements. This includes events from providers throughout the state. There are also ongoing virtual trainings offered by CLEAR  that can meet training requirements.

There is also the Land Use Academy which provides practical education for local land use decision makers in Connecticut. The program focuses on the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to serve effectively on a local land use commission. The Academy is a partnership of UConn CLEAR, the CT Bar Association, and the CT Office of Policy and Management, and has been around (in various forms under various pseudonyms) for over 30 years.

Tree Warden School

Since 1991, UConn Extension Tree Warden Outreach has provided tree wardens, deputy tree wardens, elected and appointed public officials, and community forestry volunteers with education and assistance on tree warden duties, roles and responsibilities and urban and community forestry, with a focus on sustainability and best practices. In 1992, the program formed the Tree Wardens’ Association of Connecticut, to provide a means for tree wardens and deputy tree wardens to come together through peer participation to increase and expand their knowledge and to motive them to perform their duties well.
In 1998, UConn Extension Tree Warden Outreach collaborated in creating the Tree Warden School in cooperation with the Tree Wardens’ Association of Connecticut. Over 300 tree wardens, deputy tree wardens, community forestry volunteers, arborists, landscape architects, and chief elected and appointed officials have completed the program. This program paused in 2021 as the educator retired.
