The Office of Institutional Equity (OIE) ensures the University’s commitment and responsibility to foster diverse and inclusive working and learning environments. Their work focuses on ensuring compliance with the University’s non-discrimination and anti-harassment policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations related to equal opportunity and affirmative action. They provide support and advice to all University offices on EEO recruitment and retention issues, provide sexual harassment prevention and diversity awareness training and serve as a resource for responding to reports of discrimination and harassment, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (Title I) compliance, and Title IX compliance. OIE investigates complaints of discrimination and recommends measures to mitigate discriminatory conduct that may be found to exist. The entire University community has a shared responsibility to promote affirmative action and provide equal opportunity. OIE helps ensure that the University complies with federal, state and local affirmative action and equal opportunity laws. The Office of Institutional Equity provides support and advice to all University offices on EEO recruitment and retention issues, provides sexual harassment prevention and diversity awareness training and serves as a resource for responding to reports of discrimination and harassment, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (Title I) compliance, and Title IX compliance. OIE investigates complaints of discrimination and recommends measures to mitigate discriminatory conduct that may be found to exist. The Diversity Awareness Training (3-hour seminar) and Sexual Harassment Prevention Training (2-hour seminar) are both required for all University employees. Through the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, all students, regardless of their student status (transfer, part-time, online, etc.) are required to participate in Welcome to the Pack. This video-based module provides critical information about bias, stereotyping, prejudice, microaggressions, classroom dynamics, and social media. Welcome to the Pack is designed to help students better understand how vitally important these issues are to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment and to express our community expectations.
This module is required of all incoming students starting classes at UConn in the fall and spring semesters. A transcript hold and a registration hold will be placed on the student's UConn record until a student earns an 80% on the post-test in the module. UConn’s “Protect Our Pack” Bystander Intervention program includes interactive programs and trainings that cover a variety of issues including sexual assault, intimate partner violence, stalking, bias related situations, and more. All incoming students receive an initial bystander-intervention training during orientation and are strongly encouraged to attend additional programming on the schedule during their first weekend as UConn students (Weekend of Welcome).
