A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
The University of Connecticut is taking action towards installing a microgrid on the Depot Campus. As a microgrid, Depot Campus would transition into "island mode" during power outages and serve as a safe-haven and source of energy for the local towns and university community. Recently approved by The Department of Energy
and Environmental Protection (DEEP), the technical feasibility evaluation has been accepted.
In April of 2012, UConn, along with UTC Power and the Connecticut Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority (CEFIA), commissioned a new fuel cell power plant at UConn’s Depot Campus on Thursday that will supply the campus with clean and efficient energy, cooling and heating. The formation of a microgrid would supplement this recent installation of a fuel cell and bring the university closer to its goal of carbon-nuetrality by the year 2050.
