Brief descriptions of up to 4 recent notable accomplishments by faculty engaged in sustainability research, including names and department affiliations:
Peter Miniutty, Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture, led a multidisciplinary team that developed a business and transportation model for goods delivery for the new Storrs Center (Storrs, CT). The model focused on the organization of sustainable transport models that will be environmentally friendly and economically stimulating. The model is designed to be applicable in the future to larger settings in CT.

Dr. Baikun Li (Civil and Environmental Engineering) runs a bioenergy production-wastewater treatment group at UConn. They work on hydrogen production and microbial fuel cells through anaerobic wastewater treatment. Their research focuses on developing efficient processes to generate clean sustainable energy through wastewater treatment.

Robert Pomeroy, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, worked with USAID to develop ecosystem approaches to fisheries management in the Coral Triangle (Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Timor-Lest). Their approach balances societal objectives and biotic, abiotic, and human components of ecosystems and their interactions in a meaningful ecological way.

Robert Johnston, Ag. and Resource Economics, Eric Schultz, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology; and Kathleen Segerson, Department of Economics, completed this project on accurately valuing natural resources. Since environmental restoration projects are often costly, this study uses survey techniques to estimate people values. Eventually, the project assigns values to projects like fish restoration projects that reflect the ecological importance that is often neglected in typical economic valuation.
