Curriculum:
A course is related to sustainability if it enhances the education of the student in the conceptualization and implementation of sustainable practices as defined by the World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987: “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.”
A course is focused on sustainability if, in addition to the above statement, it enhances the education of the student by:
• requiring an inquiry-based, systems analysis approach demanding the integration of economic, environmental, and social sciences
• creating linkages of the university, its faculty, students and resources with the local and global community
• developing research and service activities that address sustainability questions in diverse contexts at different temporal and spatial scales
