Established in 1970 by the students who organized CU Boulder’s first Earth Day, the Environmental Center serves as a catalyst and facilitator for a culture of sustainability. The center leads campus initiatives involving energy efficiency and sustainable transportation, to student engagement community education. The University of Colorado Environmental Center is housed within the CU Boulder Division of Student Affairs. The Center supports 17 student groups and more than 250 lab, office, and hall student Eco Leaders. It also employees 150 students annually. The center promotes peer-to-peer education on climate change and climate justice. Students are encouraged to take the Sustainable Buffs Challenge and use various tools to estimate their carbon footprint. Students can also sign up for a free Eco Kit and learn how to live a more zero-waste life style, use water more efficiently, and reduce energy bills.

The Masters of the Environment (MENV) Graduate Program at the University of Colorado Boulder is an innovative, interdisciplinary professional master’s degree that equips students with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to address the complex environmental challenges of the 21st Century. This two-year, on-campus, immersive, cohort-based graduate program builds students into leaders in a wide range of careers in conservation, consulting, energy, natural resources, planning, policy, sustainability, and more. While in the program, students must choose to concentrate their studies in one of five specializations: Environmental and Natural Resources Policy, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Sustainability in the Outdoor Industry, Sustainable Food Systems, or Urban Resilience and Sustainability.

CU Boulder's earth sciences and atmospheric science disciplines ranked No. 1 and No. 2 globally in the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s 2022 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS). The ShanghaiRanking Consultancy is an independent organization dedicated to research on higher education intelligence and consultation.
