The university as a whole does not have criteria for tenure & promotion, the primary units establish the criteria for meeting the Board of Regents tenure and promotion standards of excellence. We reviewed unit policies and several of our units include positive “Recognition of integrated, community-based, and extra-academic research” and creative work in their promotion/tenure policies.

Yes

We reviewed unit policies and several of our units include text similar to the following, “Research and creative work that extends its reach beyond academic audiences is important for shaping public conversations and knowledge and contributing to positive change. We recognize that some forms of engaged scholarship require significant time and investment beyond traditional research activities to build relationships and trust with communities and partners” in their promotion/tenure policies.

We reviewed unit policies and several of our units include text similar to the following, "Faculty are expected to develop, lead, and maintain a vigorous and independent research program at CU that addresses and helps solve critical technical and/or social problems, and contributes to the public good." in their promotion/tenure policies.

Example from ENVS program standards: "We define research impact to include broad forms of intellectual contribution, including publication, engaged scholarship, etc."..."Other scholarly products: These include, but are not limited to conference proceedings, policy reports, lay-oriented publications, media contributions, databases, software patents, official testimonials, trade publications, science communications."

8.3 Inter-campus collaboration for responsible research and innovation

Description of the institution’s inter-campus collaborations for responsible research and innovation:

CU Boulder Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Research, Creative Work and Innovation, Dr. Tanya Ennis is an active ARIS ORIC fellow. In addition, CU Boulder is a member of SPARC, a non-profit advocacy organization that supports systems for research and education that are open by default and equitable by design. Lastly, CU Boulder is a member of DataCite with our Assistant Dean for Research & Innovation Strategies acting as Board President. “DataCite enables organizations to drive innovation and advocate for and benefit from best practices in open research, data citation and metadata management, making a lasting impact on the future of open scholarly communication.”
