Documentation
Do the figures reported above cover one, two, or three academic years?:
One
A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
We examined course offerings for one academic year: AY21-22. UC has a sustainability course designation in its course catalog, so we started with those. Then did a keyword search within the online course catalog for key words or phrases related to the SDG's (provided by AASHE). UC staff reviewed the descriptions of the courses identified by the key word search to determine whether they were in fact either sustainability-focused or sustainability-inclusive. For the several dozen courses for which inclusion seemed ambiguous based on the course description, staff from the UC Sustainability Office reached out to the faculty members who teach those classes to ask them explicitly whether their course merited inclusion as sustainability-focused or -inclusive. If professors responded affirmatively, we added them to the list.
How were courses with multiple offerings or sections counted for the figures reported above?:
Each course was counted as a single course regardless of the number of offerings or sections

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
The total number of graduate and undergraduate courses and the sustainability course inventory, as noted above, count each course as one regardless of how many sections were offered. They also, per STARS guidance, exclude courses that are wholly clinical or practice-oriented in focus, and exclude courses with enrollments less than five. Experiential learning courses (co-ops, capstones, etc.) are included.
The number of departments reported above does not match with the numbers reported in PRE-5, because we removed 14 departments in our College of Medicine and one in our James L Winkle College of Pharmacy that are clinically-focused, as well as 5 departments in our College Conservatory of Music and 2 in the College of Law that are practice-focused. The number of departments thus matches with what we report in AC9.
