A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged:

For the last 10 years, Sustainability Initiatives, in conjunction with the Department of Housing and Residence Life, has led a campaign to reward students who reduce their energy consumption. Over time, the name, rules, and incentives have seen several revisions but the trends in energy savings have been consistent.

For this campaign, Sustainability Initiatives engaged students through social media, tabling in public areas, potential scholarship opportunities, and by displaying posters in residence halls.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

In years past, the Kill-a-Watt competition has resulted in savings of nearly $50,000 over the two-month period and has saved the university a total of 2,216,485 kWh of energy, equivalent to $216,004.00.

RecycleMania

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged (2nd campaign):

RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over an 8-week period each spring, colleges across the United States and Canada report the amount of recycling and trash collected each week and are in turn ranked in various categories based on who recycles the most on a per capita basis, as well as which schools have the best recycling rate as a percentage of total waste and which schools generate the least amount of combined trash and recycling.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

The University of Central Florida competed in the 2016 RecycleMania campaign. The University is also competing in the 2017 campaign. Positive impacts from 2016 are as follows.

1. Recycling Rate: 25.917%
2. Diversion Rate Per Capita: 2.98 lbs./capita
3. Overall school ranking: 147
