Part 1. Greenhouse gas emissions inventory

Has the institution conducted a GHG emissions inventory within the previous three years that includes all Scope 1 and 2 emissions? :
Yes

A copy of the most recent GHG emissions inventory:
A brief description of the methodology and/or tool used to complete the GHG emissions inventory:
The Climate Registry Information System (CRIS) tool is used to complete the GHG emissions inventory of the University of California, Santa Barbara. CRIS is The Climate Registry’s online greenhouse gas (GHG) calculation, reporting, and verification tool. CRIS also provides public access to The Registry’s verified emission reports.

Has the GHG emissions inventory been validated internally by personnel who are independent of the GHG accounting and reporting process and/or verified by an independent, external third party?:
Yes

A brief description of the GHG inventory verification process:
Our GHG emissions inventory is validated through The Climate Registry, a nonprofit collaboration among North American states, provinces, territories, and Native Sovereign Nations that sets consistent and transparent standards to calculate, verify, and publicly report greenhouse gas emissions in a single registry.
http://www.theclimateregistry.org/ Scope 3 emissions are included in our inventory reported to TCR but only scope 1 & 2 are third party verified.

Documentation to support the GHG inventory verification process:
Scope 1 GHG emissions
Gross Scope 1 GHG emissions, performance year:

Stationary combustion 16,752.52 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Other sources (mobile combustion, process emissions, fugitive emissions) 983.69 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Total gross Scope 1 GHG emissions, performance year:
17,736.21 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Scope 2 GHG emissions
Gross Scope 2 GHG emissions, performance year (market-based):
Weight in MTCO2e
Imported electricity 334.63 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Imported thermal energy 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Total gross Scope 2 GHG emissions, performance year:
334.63 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

GHG emissions from biomass combustion
Gross GHG emissions from biogenic sources, performance year:
0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Scope 3 GHG emissions
Does the GHG emissions inventory include Scope 3 emissions from the following sources?:
Yes or No Weight in MTCO2e
Business travel Yes 1,299.37 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Commuting Yes 6,547.07 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Purchased goods and services No ---
Capital goods No ---
Fuel- and energy-related activities not included in Scope 1 or Scope 2 No ---
Waste generated in operations No ---
Other sources No ---

Total Scope 3 GHG emissions, performance year:
7,846.44 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

A brief description of how the institution accounted for its Scope 3 emissions:
Scope 3 emissions reported to TCR include emissions resulting from University-paid business air travel, and faculty, staff, and student commuting to and from campus. Air travel emission calculations are based on mileage calculations derived from a subset of the total amount spent on air travel. The Connexxus travel system tracks air miles, and from this data, a campus-specific cost factor can be applied to derive air miles traveled. Miles are converted to resultant GHG emissions using air travel emissions factors. Commuter emissions are based on accurate mode-split data derived from comprehensive campus surveys administered annually during the spring quarter. Using methodology developed by the UC Transportation Working Group, GHG emissions for the entire population of the campus are calculated and updated annually. GHG-emitting transportation modes include single-occupancy vehicles, carpooling, vanpools, motorcycles, and bus commuting. These figures are adjusted for average ridership.

Part 2. Air pollutant emissions inventory

Has the institution completed an inventory within the previous three years to quantify its air pollutant emissions?:
Yes

Annual weight of emissions for::
Weight of Emissions
Nitrogen oxides (NOx) 41.65 Tons
Sulfur oxides (SOx) 11.62 Tons
Carbon monoxide (CO) 187.47 Tons
Particulate matter (PM) 6.59 Tons
Ozone (O3) 0 Tons
Lead (Pb) 0 Tons
Hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) 6.59 Tons
Ozone-depleting compounds (ODCs) 0 Tons
Other standard categories of air emissions identified in permits and/or regulations 0 Tons

Do the air pollutant emissions figures provided include the following sources?:
Yes or No
Major stationary sources Yes
Area sources No
Mobile sources No
Commuting No
Off-site electricity production No

None
A brief description of the methodology(ies) the institution used to complete its air emissions inventory:
UCSB reports annually to the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District. All diesel emergency generators and some natural gas boilers are metered and calculations are based on fuel consumption and generator run hours. For those sources that were not metered we calculate emissions based on the equipment rated potential to emit, this approach estimates emissions by using a worst-case scenario approach. Reported emissions from permitted stationary sources are listed in units of tons per year. The permit does not track ODCs or Ozone

Optional Fields

Gross Scope 2 GHG emissions from purchased electricity (location-based):
16,861.56 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Gross Scope 2 GHG emissions from imported thermal energy (location-based) :
0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
