A brief description of the undergraduate degree program:

Students majoring in environmental studies will explore a wide variety of environmental topics, drawing on concepts, theories, and research methods from the natural and physical sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The environmental studies program generates transformative ideas through research, and educates students to become agents of change for a healthier and more just environment.

The UCSB Department of Geography Is Represented By Three Cross-Cutting Themes:

1) Earth System Science: the physical and biological processes of the environment.

2) Human Geography: the way humans perceive, interact with, and modify the environment.

3) Modeling, Measurement, and Computation: techniques for the collection, analysis, and interpretation of geospatial data using tools such as GIS, remote sensing, and spatial statistics.

Global Studies

Explains the basic contours of contemporary global social, cultural, economic, environmental and political issues. Offers a coherent introduction to global culture and ethics, global ideologies and world order, and global economy and development.

Undergraduate Specialization in Literature and the Environment

A brief description of the undergraduate minor, concentration or certificate:

In order to attain a certificate, students in the English major complete four environmentally oriented courses from a range of over two-dozen that are regularly offered. They explore environmental issues from British, American, and Global perspectives, using a host of methodological approaches, with such emphases as non-human/human relations, environmental and social justice within a global rather than national context, and the political impact of institutions, networks, and regimes on bodies and the biosphere. Such diversity has allowed students to take courses as varied as “American Romanticism and Environmental Imagination,” “Postcolonial and Global Ecological Imaginations,” “Milton and Ecology,” “Natural Representations: Wordsworth, Dickinson, Bishop,” and “Animal Theory.”

This major employs an integrated view of the earth as a dynamically linked system. Students take traditional geology courses while pursuing coursework in related disciplines, such as ocean, atmospheric, and earth-surface processes.
