A brief description of the institution’s bicycle program, including the year the award was achieved and/or renewed:
UCSB has been a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Business since 2010 and Gold Level Bicycle Friendly University since BFU inception in 2011. UCSB has over 7 miles of Class I bicycle paths, 3 bicycle underpasses and 9 bicycle roundabouts. Students have lock-in registration fees that fund over $125k in bicycle education and infrastructure improvements each year that is equally matched with another $125K per year by UCSB administration for bicycle infrastructure maintenance. Students also have $250k per year in lock-in registration fees to fund the Associated Student Bicycle Shop which educates and loans tools and expertise to teach the campus community how to maintain and repair their bicycles. UCSB has a two-mile restriction on the sale of long-term parking permits to undergraduates. UCSB has one of the highest human-powered commuter mode splits in the USA with 82% using human-powered modes (53% of UCSB’s undergraduates bicycle between their home and Class, 22% Walk and 7% Skateboard).
