A brief description of how the physical campus plan or amendment includes sustainability:
The UCSB Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) was developed with five key principals in mind. These principles include: house students, faculty, and staff; integrate sustainable practices; and contribute to regional solutions.
As was also identified in our Strategic Academic Plan (2007-2025), there is a great need for affordable housing in our community. The LRDP sets out plans for providing housing for 30-50% of our students and building nearly 1,800 housing units for staff and faculty.
In light of including sustainable practices as a key principle, The LRDP also aims to minimize its impact on the
environment by: reducing automobile use by increasing housing on or near campus; defining and protecting environmentally sensitive areas of the campus, including coastal resources; continuing implementation of environmentally friendly transportation programs, including bicycling, carshare, vanpools, and public transit; continuing to expand enhancement programs for the surrounding natural environment, including the sloughs, lagoon, and shoreline; working toward becoming a more “carbon-neutral” campus; and managing resources sustainably through increased conservation programs.
To fulfill its goal of contributing to regional solutions, the LRDP states that the university will continue to contribute its fair share both financially and with its expertise, making the Santa Barbara/Goleta area a better place.
These principles are discussed in more depth in the introduction of the plan, page A3.
