A brief description of the plan of action to achieve waste reduction goals:

The University of California, Santa Barbara has committed to achieving zero waste by 2020. This is part of our goals outlined in the Camupus Sustainability Plan. In academic year 2010/2011, we began an in-bulding deployment of co-mingled recycle bins that were partnered with landfill bins. We deployed 110 of these with new signage. We also negotiated with our Waste Hauler to paint the lids of our exterior bins blue, so we could match the in-building program across the campus and have a co-mingled bin sit next to a landfill bin to achieve consistency both inside and outside the buildngs. In academic year 2011/2012, we began the campus compost pliot program to collect post-consumer food waste from the Arbor, the UCen, the Coral Tree, and the Courtyard Cafe (the four eateries on campus). We also implemented post-consumer food waste collection within the UCen for the balance of the eateries on campus. We are also in the process of deploying a special collection system for lab waste (needles and non-recyclables) for 10 laboratories and Student Health Services. We are in the process of updating the goals established in the Campus Sustainability Plan and will have our new goals identifying additional steps to help us achieve zero waste by 2020.
